Welcome Nick Hester!

HD2 is excited to announce the addition of Nicholas Hester, an architectural intern and all-around great southern guy from Alabama. Nick is a graduate of Mississippi State University’s School of Architecture (hmmm, just like Melanie…). Nick brings with him several years of research and teaching experience with an emphasis on sustainability. He designed and managed the publication of a 35th Anniversary compendium entitled, Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems 35 Years of Serious Commotion. His work with Mississippi State University’s GreenMobile project earned him the ARCC King Student Medal for Excellence in Environmental Design Research in 2009. His computer skills are not to be underestimated!

MN-CPPC Grant Award

Thanks to the efforts of Melanie Hartwig-Davis, CHEVERLY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH has received its 2nd Grant Award through the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission! $87,710 was awarded to CUMC in the 2011 Historic Preservation Grant Program. Twelve historic properties received awards through this very competitive process. In 2009, $45,000 was awarded to CUMC to begin energy efficient upgrades at the Cheverly site. This additional grant money will enable HD Squared Architects, LLC to continue these efforts. ‘Thank You!’ to the Prince George’s County Historic Preservation Commission for recognizing the importance of this historic structure in the heart of Cheverly.

Belleview Rain Garden Process

Check out a few process images of our rain garden installation at Belleview Avenue. This bio-retention area captures the rainwater from two downspouts on the front of the home. The Weeping Willow thrives through droughts as the layers of material hold water for its use.

CUMC Energy Efficient Upgrades

Cheverly United Methodist Church energy efficient upgrades included the repair of the original stain glass windows and installation of supplemental interior windows. This allows the integrity of the original structure to be preserved while enhancing the comfort of the occupants.

Shoals Creek

The PBS2 Residence provided HD2 Architects, LLC the opportunity to transform the interior of a typical ‘builder-built home’ into a custom fit for the home owners. The entire first floor received new finishes as well as the master suite upstairs.

The original kitchen was completely gutted. New cabinets and finishes are bright and welcoming. A desk area was removed to provide much needed pantry space. The sink was relocated, creating a corner feature with a glass tile accent wall and farm sink.

A corner tub was removed from the master bathroom. A larger shower and soaking tub was installed to better suit the clients’ lifestyle. A variety of square tiles were used to accent the pair of square windows above the tub. A square opening between the tub and the shower provides a place for accents and accessories

One increasing request is for HD2 to create a ‘master suite’ on the main level of the home for future accessibility as the owners become less mobile. In this case, the laundry room was relocated upstairs, making available space to create a full bath on the main level. The existing den doorway can be restructured to create this suite if ever desired.
